What is Single-Session CBT

Single-Session Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a form of therapy that aims to help people address their mental health challenges in just one session. It aims to provide immediate support and strategies to manage specific issues or symptoms. In single-session CBT, the therapist and the individual work together to identify the specific problem they want to address. This could be something like managing anxiety, or coping with stress, for instance. Or maybe dealing with a particular phobia. The therapist helps the person understand the thoughts, emotions, and behaviours that contribute to the problem.

During the session, the therapist may use various techniques to help the individual change their thinking patterns and behaviours. They might teach relaxation techniques, provide practical strategies to challenge negative thoughts, or help develop coping mechanisms. The focus is on providing immediate tools and skills that the person can use right away.

What is Single-Session CBT

Single-session CBT is typically more structured and goal-oriented compared to traditional therapy. This is because it aims to achieve specific outcomes within a shorter time frame. The therapist and the individual collaborate to create an action plan that the person can implement outside of the session. While single-session CBT can be beneficial for some individuals, it may not be suitable for everyone, or every issue. Some problems may require more extensive therapy over multiple sessions. Therefore, it’s important to consult with a mental health professional to determine the most appropriate treatment approach based on individual needs.

The newer version of CBT, TactileCBT (TCBT) is perfectly aligned to deliver Single Session Therapy. TCBT has been shown in treatment to be effective in therapy delivered over a reduced number of sessions. Traditional CBT often needs 12 to 20 sessions. However, sometimes more sessions are required. In contrast, TCBT is normally completed over 6 to 10 sessions; this is obviously variable depending on the issue being treated.

TCBT Breakout Sessions

Sometimes you need help and resolutions, and you need them quickly. Therefore waiting days, or weeks between sessions just will not deliver the results you require. Breakout sessions achieve just that, a breakout from the maze of emotions you are experiencing. The session can last anything from two hours, to a whole day. Normally breakout sessions do not have a scheduled finish time. So if the day has been pre-booked, it goes on as long as required. Of course, this approach is not provided for all conditions; please ensure you discuss your personal situation in advance.

Breakthrough CBT Sessions

‘Breakout Sessions’ must not be confused with ‘Breakthrough Sessions’. With TCBT, a breakthrough refers to a significant and positive change, or realisation that occurs during the course of therapy. It represents a moment of clarity, insight, or understanding that can lead to transformative shifts in a person’s thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

A CBT breakthrough often involves challenging and changing distorted or negative thinking patterns, beliefs, and assumptions that contribute to emotional distress, or problematic behaviours. It may also involve uncovering and addressing underlying core beliefs or automatic thoughts that are influencing one’s perceptions and reactions to situations. CBT breakthroughs can be empowering and transformative. As a result, they often lead to improved emotional well-being, better coping strategies, and healthier behaviours. However, it’s important to note that breakthroughs are unique to each individual and their specific therapeutic journey. They may happen gradually, or suddenly, and the impact and timing can vary from person to person.

Pause Button Therapy, published worldwide by Hay House. How helpful would it be if we could occasionally just pause: freeze time for a few moments and consider the consequences of the actions we are about to take?

Pause Button Therapy Book

Consequently, it empowers you to break free of negative habits and unconscious responses. PBT is based on an incredibly simple idea but it can be used for a whole host of issues. PBT has been hugely successful in the treatment of everything from addiction and weight issues to depression, anxiety and relationship problems. And now this book will show you the many ways in which you can use it to transform your experience of life.

“The Pause Button Therapy Book clearly describes a technique that can be employed to very good effect in a range of therapies. I recommend its use” Windy Dryden PhD, Professor of Psychotherapeutic Studies, Goldsmiths University of London. Order the book from Amazon.
